More firms join UN sustainability initiative

Article Type: News From: Management of Environmental Quality: An International Journal, Volume 23, Issue 6.

Membership of “Global Compact”, an UN initiative that encourages businesses to become more sustainable and socially responsible increased significantly in 2011, according to its latest annual report published.

The Global Compact report shows a 54 per cent rise in the number of participants. About three-quarters are complying with requirements on information disclosure, in line with 2010 levels. Some 963 firms were expelled because of persistent non-compliance. Nearly half of companies (44 per cent) said their policies are in line with their commitments under the Global Compact. About one-quarter (28 per cent) consider their implementation of the initiative's ten principles to be an advanced or a fairly advanced stage. But three-quarters are in the early stages of this process.
