Project proposal: Bluetooth application group

Today, there are several alternatives available for the transfer of information between different pieces of equipment, most of them utilising cables. Several manufacturers of industrial equipment are now considering changing to short range wireless communication using the Bluetooth concept, operating at 2.4 GHz. With this change of technology, the need for costly wiring is eliminated. Moreover, new applications may be realised, which previously have been limited by the cable routing.
IVF, the Swedish Institute of Production Engineering Research, invites manufacturers of electronics to a joint venture to approach the challenges with this new technique. The idea is that the participants form a group project, where IVF assists in the handling of the new concept in their products.
The aim of the project is that the participating companies, by access to the expertise and facilities at IVF, will have a substantially reduced lead-time for the design and production of the new products. Additionally, the products shall maintain their high reliability after the introduction of the wireless technology.
The project will include activities such as:

joint search for information and education on Bluetooth;
- •
forming of specifications;
- •
expansion of lab utilities for testing;
- •
test methodology;
- •
adaptation of software for the exchange of information via Bluetooth;
- •
evaluation of prototypes.
This proposal is mainly directed to Swedish small and medium enterprises (SMEs), but other companies are welcome as well.
