Corticosteroids and osteoporosis

Corticosteroids and osteoporosis

Over 200,000 people in the UK taking oral corticosteroids are at high risk of fractures because they are not being given information on how to protect their bones from osteoporosis according to the National Osteoporosis Society. A study of eight GP practices found that 87 per cent of patients taking long term or high dose corticosteroids had not been given treatment to prevent bone loss when as many as 40 per cent of corticosteroid users suffer fractures due to fragile bones. In response the NOS has produced the first corticosteroid guidance document for GPs and hospital doctors and a free information sheet for patients. This is available free from the NOS, P O Box 10, Radstock, Bath BA3 3YB. A more detailed booklet Corticosteroids and Bone Health is also available priced £2.
