International year of older persons

The United Nations International Year of Older Persons was launched at the end of 1998 and the British Government is commited to the principle of equality for current and future generations of older people. Health Minister John Denham commented that there is a huge wealth of skills and experience held by older people and the whole of the community can benefit from sharing and learning from this knowledge. This year the Government will work together with voluntary organisations on the key themes of citizenship, looking at income, security, recognition and representations; lifelong learning, promoting educational opportunities in the widest sense and organisations’ valuing older people and how they can be encouraged to understand and act on the changing needs of older people. Action taken by the Government includes awarding funding for the Age Concern Secretariat for the Year committing to funding of £100,000 for 1999/00. The Secretariat has developed a resource pack to help organisations plan activities. They have also set up a Website containing a calendar of events and issued a quarterly newsletter giving information of themes and events for the year.
