Safe and sound
This is a scheme that encourages people to develop ideas for children’s safe travel to school using transport other than cars and buses, such as cycling and walking. This is an important way to encourage children to take more exercise. Children who are physically active are more likely to grow into active adults reducing the risk of developing excess weight, heart disease and other illnesses. Ideas that have been put forward to promote the scheme include teaching the children road sense, on-road training, installation of secure cycle parks, education programmes aimed at parents and teachers to reduce car journeys and the training of volunteers to provide safety advice.
