Free sight tests for older people

From 1 April 1999 an additional seven million people over 60 will benefit from free sight tests, saving older people between £30m and £40m each year. Regular eye tests also pick up potentially blinding eye conditions such as glaucoma and diabetic eye disease. It is estimated that 1.5 million over 60s will take up the offer of free sight tests. Older people are more vulnerable to eye disease. Three quarters of those registered blind and partially sighted are over 70. According to the RNIB over half a million people in the UK aged 60 or over could have had their sight saved if free NHS eye tests has been introduced.
