Coronary heart disease waning?

Coronary heart disease waning?

Coronary heart disease could be toppled from its position as the UK's leading cause of death in coming decades if current knowledge about its causes and prevention are turned into effective policy action. Trends in deaths from CHD in the UK have shown a steady decline since the early 1970s but the rate of decline has not been as fast as in similar developed countries such as the USA and Australia. The National Heart Forum has recently published a report, "Looking to the future: making coronary disease an epidemic of the past". It reviews evidence on traditional risk factors and new concepts in heart disease causation and assesses the implications for current prevention strategies and whether they need to change. With regard to nutrition, the report stresses the need to reduce blood cholesterol levels to a biologically normal level and to prevent unhealthy weight gain. This can be achieved by reducing fat in the diet and increasing consumption of fruit and vegetables.
