Health action zones

Frank Dobson, the Health Secretary, has announced the allocation of £74 million to 15 second-wave action zones. Health Action Zones will benefit the health of 13 million people and are a key part of the Government's drive to target areas with particularly high levels of ill health. Health targets include reducing the CHD mortality rate, reducing teenage conceptions, increasing exercise uptake, improving educational attainment, reducing school exclusions and reducing the number of people who are homeless and in unsuitable accommodation. Examples of new and better services in the first wave of HAZ include the Bradford diabetes service which is being completely overhauled, a scheme in Luton which prioritizes home repair grants for elderly people who are disabled or have a low income for adaptations and improvements to private sector housing and a new multi-agency support service for children with learning disabilities in Lambeth offering early support and help with child development and child management.
