Buying safe food

Environmental health officers have produced a leaflet with ten tips for shoppers wanting to buy safe food. The Chartered Institute of Environment Health's chairman of the Food and General Health Committee said that environmental health officers were well placed to give such advice. The preparation of safe food in the home is vitally important but this will not always protect them if the food they buy is unsafe to begin with. The leaflet advises consumers to complain to the local environmental health department if there is unsatisfactory food handling, to check that the packaging is undamaged and to refuse food which is served by someone who is smoking or eating. Copies of the leaflet can be obtained from CIEH Press Office, Chadwick Court, 15 Hatfields, London SE1 8DJ. Tel: 0171 827 5861.
