In 1998, 513 million prescriptions were dispensed in the UK, an increase of 13 per cent since 1994 with an average ingredient cost of £9.16. A total of 85 per cent were free of charge to the patient. About 95 per cent of children had been immunised against diphtheria, tetanus and polio by their second birthday. A total of 55,300 children were looked after in the UK at 31 March 1999, 4 per cent more than a year earlier. The number of NHS hospital and community health services direct care staff rose from 497,300 in 1995 to 517,300 in 1998.
