Shopping in poor neighbourhoods

Yvette Cooper, Minister for Public Health, recently launched the consultation report into improving shopping access for people living in deprived neighbourhoods. The Policy Action Team's report, Improving Shopping Access suggests a plan of action. It outlines all kinds of possible solutions from crime reduction to community owned shops. Local thriving shops can be great for business and great for the community too. A local meeting place to reinforce family and social networks provide the much needed informal support that is so often lacking in poorer neighbourhoods. Some of the suggested proposals are a scheme to guarantee loans to make it easier for retailers to start up new businesses, shops owned by the community and investigating the benefits of actively encouraging letting residential property above shops to offer tenants and shopkeepers a sense of security and a deterrent against vandalism. Details of the report are on the Department of Health Web site at: www.doh.gov.uk
