Positive outlook for private label overseas
Food from Britain reports that future opportunities for the UK private label sector will be overseas, particularly in Belgium, Italy, France and The Netherlands. Spain and Portugal will also provide opportunities for suppliers. Private label penetration in the UK stands at 40 per cent and Food from Britain estimates that this private label penetration has slowed. On the Continent buyers have been particularly interested in UK retailers' strategies in raising the quality of their private label ranges so they are perceived by customers to be equal or above that of brand leaders. In areas such as chilled ready meals, private label has over an 80 per cent share.
