Cabbage aphid biodiversity
New research to discover more about the cabbage aphid and how it interacts with its host plant will help lead to the development of plants resistant to aphids and reduce the need for insecticides on these vegetables. The aim is to establish how the genetic variation in the aphids relates to the plants they feed on. Once this is established, plants can be bred which are able to withstand the onslaught of the aphids. The cabbage aphid is responsible for huge losses in the vegetable industry and attacks a wide range of other Brassica crops worldwide. The work is being carried out by the Horticulture Research International and is being supported by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.
