Health checks on retirement

Earlier this year, Public Health Minister, Yvette Cooper, announced pilot schemes for offering health checks for people retiring from work. The scheme will include checks and advice on blood pressure, fuel and heating, fitness level, diet, immunisation and screening programmes. Around £800,000 is being made available over the next year. Yvette Cooper said that the projects are a way of improving health and preventing illness in older people and a way of encouraging people to stay healthy in later life. The first health check pilot schemes will take place in North Nottinghamshire, Hull and East Riding and in the West Midlands and are expected to run for up to two years. Further pilot schemes will be announced later this year in other regions of England.
