Coffee during pregnancy
Coffee during pregnancy
The Food Standards Agency is advising pregnant women to limit their coffee intake to less than the equivalent of four average cups a day. This follows a review by the independent Committee of Toxicity of Chemicals in Food, Consumer Products and the Environment (COT). After examining 30 studies, COT noted that caffeine intake above 300mg per day shows a plausible association with low birth weight and spontaneous abortion. Caffeine not only occurs in coffee, but also in a variety of foods such as tea, chocolate and some soft drinks. Certain over-the-counter medicines such as cold and flu remedies, headache treatments, diet pills and diuretics also contain caffeine.
