National symposium questions the role of the healthcare professional in celiac disease
On 30 November 2005 the BDA Gastroenterology Interest Group and Glutafin hosted Coeliac disease, adherence and the role of the healthcare professional, a national symposium that will explore the problem of adherence to the gluten-free diet and discuss the role of the healthcare professional in helping patients manage their condition.
Lifelong compliance with the gluten-free diet is the greatest challenge facing people with coeliac disease. Although there is a large and ever-increasing variety of gluten-free food on the market many people still find strict adherence to the diet difficult and this can inevitably make them susceptible to the symptoms and long-term complications of coeliac disease.
Healthcare professionals can play a key role in helping patients understand their condition and manage their diet, and as such must themselves have a sound understanding of coeliac disease and the issues surrounding compliance.
Coeliac disease, adherence and the role of the healthcare professional will see experts in the field, including Consultant Gastroenterologist Dr Geoffrey Holmes, Physician and Gastroenterologist Dr Jeffrey Butterworth, Consultant Clinical Psychologist Polly Carmichael, GP Dr Sohail Butt, Senior Dietitian Claire Wylie and Paediatric Dietitian Jacqui Lowden, discuss the importance and management of compliance in adult and adolescent patients. Delegates will be provided with an insight into the psychological issues behind adherence and will have the opportunity to hear and contribute to debate on who should take ultimate responsibility for compliance: the patient or the healthcare professional.
