During the early part of the year, there are lots of exhibitions and conferences on various aspects of food, nutrition and health.

One of the events I visited was the Vitality show at Olympia at the end of March and the beginning of April. This was an enormously popular event with lots of stands on nutrition and health as well as general stands on beauty and clothes. It was well attended by mainly women, but it was interesting to see how many people were attending for information on aspects of their own health. Often the conditions that people were trying to obtain advice about were quite serious ones. It shows how difficult it can be for people to obtain advice from a more holistic aspect, which includes all aspects of factors affecting health.

Practice nurses are key in providing this type of information to individuals. I attended an event for practice nurses in Cardiff, which was free to participants. It was well attended and most practice nurses were looking for help and inspiration on dealing with their patients. There were all types of topics covered and there was also a small exhibition from manufacturers of health products and self-help groups. It was good to see the enthusiasm for learning new information and I hope this will be an important aspect of enhancing patient care. There are a future series of such events throughout the country which can be found at: www.nipevents.com
