GL Diet Made Simple

Antony Worrall Thompson and Mabel Blades and Jane SutheringKyle CathieISBN 1-8562-6662-1

The aim with any food product is always to try to satisfy at least two of the three distinct consumer drivers, heath, indulgence and convenience.

There was once a time when recipe books fell into two distinct camps, healthy and indulgent and never the twain shall meet but AWT's “GL diet made simple” breaks this mould and at the same time ticks the boxes of health, convenience and indulgence.

Say to the average consumer are you interested in the Glycaemic Load (GL) of a meal and they will probably be lost for words, however, ask the average consumer if they would you like to eat Aromatic Lamb Fillet followed by Peach & Blueberry Gratin and they will be likely to take you up on the offer whatever its GL is.

Antony states that his two children, Toby and Billie, “acted unknowingly as guinea pigs” and on this basis I cooked a selection of recipes for my two children, Henry and Edward, along the same lines.

With many diets, those wishing to follow the rules are often required to scour the health food shops and specialist retailers in order to access some of the less common ingredients however, the GL diet made simple recipe's use only widely available ingredients, all of which I found in my local supermarket, hence the convenience box gets a tick.

Indulgence, the meals I cooked, Asian beef salad, cod, prawn and sweetcorn chowder, luxury fruit salad and hot chocolate Soufflé would have graced the menu of any restaurant (as would many of the recipes) and left my willing tasters delighted and asking for more. This level of indulgent recipe with a clear health benefit is the way forward for today's modern consumer. Backed by the clear interest in the subject by one of the UK's top chefs and superbly photographed throughout by Steve Lee, the “GL diet made simple” should not be seen as a diet book to be followed slavishly but as a range of everyday and special occasion recipes that should be served over and over again.
