ESPE 2008 (Annual Meeting of the European Society for Paediatric Endocrinology)

Article Type: Conference reports From: Nutrition & Food Science, Volume 39, Issue 2.

September 20-23 2008, Istanbul Turkey

This was an excellent meeting to attend for anyone with an interest in endocrinology. While it was mainly attended by paediatricians from throughout the world it would also be of interest in providing an expanding awareness to those nutritionists and dietitians engaged in research in this topic.

Throughout the day there were four concurrent events of particular interest to nutritionists including sessions on:

  • The obesity club – the metabolic syndrome in the paediatric age range.

  • Diabetes.

  • Bone growth.

  • Type 2 diabetes in children.

  • Management of childhood and adolescent obesity.

  • Prader Willi syndrome and the difficulties in clinical management.

  • Perinatal programming.

  • Diabetes and insulin resistance.

  • Central weight regulation.

Each session allowed for discussion plus a number of related short presentations.

There was a large poster presentation, which included a number of posters on original research on topics related to nutrition from:

  • Obesity including the management of childhood and adolescent obesity.

  • Diabetes in children and adolescents including the upsurgence in Type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome as well as a discussion on insulin resistance and methods of treatment.

  • Blood lipid profiles.

  • Body composition of those with diabetes.

  • Bone growth and bone mineral density of children.

  • Iodine intake and thyroid function and conditions affecting the thyroid plus screening.

  • Perinatal programming including the effect of infants born to mothers with poor glycaemic control, diabetes in family members.

  • Detailed information on BMIs and body composition and stature, head circumference and body size.

  • Prader Willi syndrome and the difficulties in clinical management and use of growth hormone therapy.

  • Diabetes and insulin resistance.

  • Central weight regulation.

  • Dietary intake of nutrients.

  • Blood pressure in children and adolescents.

  • Anorexia nervosa.

The presentations and posters were from all over the world and I found of particular interest those on vitamin D and rickets from countries, which are sunny!

There were also sessions on meet the expert with copious handouts with one on Type 2 diabetes in children and another on the Prader Willi syndrome of assistance to those dealing with the topics.

There was also an exhibition of pharmacological products plus books as well as from charities. The Prader-Willi syndrome association provided information on how to deal with the condition for dietitians, which may be of use to those working with the condition (www.pwsausa.org).

It is well worth nutritionists attending this conference and a future joint one on Global care in paediatric endocrinology is planned for 9-12 September 2009 (www.lwpes-espe2009.org).
