Teaching kids about good taste

Article Type: Food facts From: Nutrition & Food Science, Volume 39, Issue 5.

A contemporary take on the traditional Punch & Judy puppet theatre is being launched at Worcester Feast – the county's first-ever food and wine festival aimed at all the family, which runs from 4th to 6th September 2009.

Munch & Chew-Me will feature puppets made from old fruit and vegetables as well as used food packaging. Children coming along to Worcester Feast will be able to create their own puppet and see it perform in a show devised by a local theatre group.

As well as teaching children about healthy eating, the show will educate them about the huge amount of food that goes to waste in the UK each year in an entertaining way.

Numerous food and drink suppliers have signed up for Worcester Feast and more than 120 exhibitors are expected at the three-day extravaganza. Other attractions will include a Taste of Worcester, The Champagne Garden, the Heart of England Fine Food cookery school and theatre, an extensive wine tasting cellar in the cloister area of the cathedral and a wine school. An Ale Trail around the city will take in some of the oldest hostelries in Worcester with The Great Worcestershire Pie Hunt being another Feast feature.

Commenting on Munch & Chew-Me, Worcester Feast's CEO, Paul Hopkins, said:

“Kids still love traditional entertainment even in this age of laptops and computer games. What better way to get a message across than involving children in making puppets and then watching them perform in a show that carries a number of serious messages”.
