Top Institute (TI) Food and Nutrition is pleased to announce the appointment of Prof. Wim Saris as Science Director, Nutrition and Health with effect from June 2009.

TI Food and Nutrition carries out long-term strategic research to enhance innovation in the food industry in providing good tasting foods that are safe and healthy.

Currently, Prof. Wim Saris (59, Dutch nationality) is Corporate Scientist Human Nutrition at DSM Food Specialties in Delft and Professor of Human Nutrition at Maastricht University in The Netherlands. After graduating in Human Nutrition from the Wageningen University, he obtained a medical degree from the University of Nijmegen. He then continued at the University of Nijmegen to complete his PhD degree on daily physical activity of children in relation to cardiovascular risk factors. He held several academic positions in the Universities of Nijmegen and Maastricht before his appointment in 1988 as Professor of Human Nutrition at Maastricht University.

Currently, he is Coordinator of the EU research programme Diogenes: Diet, Obesity and Genes and Board Member of The Netherlands Metabolomics Centre, the Human Nutrition Institute in Washington DC (USA), Kompetenz Network Obesity, Munich (Germany) and the Centre for Advanced Food Studies in Denmark. As the chairman of the Nutrition & Health working group, Wim Saris has made a major contribution to the European Technology Platform Food for Life.
