Optegra launched the UK's first ever age-related macular degeneration (AMD) genetic testing kit this month. AMD is the world's most common retinal disease, affecting over 500,000 people in the UK and is a major source of blindness worldwide. AMD occurs when the macula – the central part of the retina that sends fine, detailed images to our brain – begins to break down. The number of patients suffering from AMD is continually rising, currently affecting almost 20 million people across Europe. Three hundred people lose their sight every week in the UK and one in five people over the age of 85 years old already have the disease. Nutrition is a factor in the development of AMD.
