New report offers insight into health attitudes

Article Type: Food facts From: Nutrition & Food Science, Volume 40, Issue 4.

Findings reveal more needs to be done to improve health in the north west of England. The report, Reaching Out: Understanding the health attitudes of harder to reach groups in the North West, is the result of face-to-face research commissioned by NHS North West, Our Life and Pfizer Limited. The partnership aimed to discover the health attitudes and lifestyle choices of an economically deprived population with existing health risk factors.

Worryingly, the report suggests that respondents have an unrealistic perception of their own health: 26 per cent of people surveyed were clinically obese (with a BMI of over 30), yet only 7 per cent of this group recognized that they were overweight. Similarly, as few as 6 per cent of people surveyed thought they were binge drinkers, whereas the reality was 40 per cent.
