Dr Robert A. Scott was appointed by the Adelphi University Board of Trustees as the ninth president and professor of anthropology and sociology in July 2000. He has built on Adelphi's rich traditions in undergraduate and graduate education and continues to link the liberal arts and sciences with professional programs. Dr Scott has been the driving force behind the success Adelphi University has achieved in the past four years. Enrollment (FTE) has increased by 40 percent since September 2000. To support the increase in students, more than 100 new faculty have been hired over the past three years with 34 in fall 2003 and 42 in fall 2004. The University recently completed its first new residence hall in 36 years to accommodate growing student demand. Alumni giving has risen by nearly 400 percent, the University received its largest one-time gift from a living individual and named the School of Business Building, Hagedorn Hall, and subsequently received another $1 million gift, the largest gift from an alumnus.

Adelphi is a doctoral level, non-sectarian private university comprising seven schools: the College of Arts and Sciences; the Honors College; the schools of Business, Education, Nursing, and Social Work; and the Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies. At its Garden City campus and extension sites, Adelphi University enrolls nearly 8,000 students, from three dozen states and more than 45 countries, in 100 baccalaureate, masters, doctoral, and post-doctoral, and certificate programs. The University has nearly 85,000 alumni and a heritage that spans three centuries.

Founded in Brooklyn as an academy in 1863 and as a collegiate institution in 1896, Adelphi is the oldest and most selective private university on Long Island, and was one of the first co-educational colleges in New York State. Since 1929, Adelphi has been located on a beautiful, 75-acre campus in historic Garden City, NY, 45 minutes from New York City. The University also maintains centers in Suffolk County, Duchess County, and Manhattan.

Dr Scott's philosophy of an "engaged" university is apparent in his dedication to the community. Since joining Adelphi he has received a number of prestigious awards including: Harbor Child Care Distinguished Service Award; Huntington Chamber of Commerce - Regional Business Partnership Award for Excellence in Higher Education; "Telly Award" for Ethics in Sports on Telecare; Association for Commerce Industry and Technology Award for Distinguished Service in Field of Higher Education; the Raoul Wallenberg Humanitarian Leadership Award; and the Garden City Chamber of Commerce Award for Community Service. Dr Scott also serves on the boards of the American Council on Education's Commission on International Education; Global Kids, Inc.; the Long Island Association; the Regional Plan Association; and the Advisory Board to Unesco. Under his leadership, the University was elected as an NGO affiliate of the United Nations. He has been a speaker and consultant for Universities in North America, Europe, and Asia, and has represented the United States at numerous international forums.
