Total expenditure (BMI Special Report 264: The Economic Significance of Maintenance ­ Maintenance Expenditure 1980-1996, available from BMI as part of the BMI Subscription Service, or separately priced £20.00) on maintenance in Great Britain rose 6.4 per cent in 1996 to £38,386 million. This accounts for over 5 per cent of the country's Gross Domestic Product.

Output from the building maintenance sector now represents more than the output from the agriculture and mining industries put together.

The total value of maintenance expenditure at constant prices rose 3.6 per cent between 1995 and 1996 but is still 7 per cent down on the peak level of 1989 (see Figure 1).

The strongest growth has come from the private non housing sector which rose 14 per cent between 1995 and 1996.

The estimate of total maintenance spend is built up from government figures for contractors' repair and maintenance output, an estimate of output by private sector direct labour organisations and figures for householders' expenditure on DIY materials taken from the UK National Accounts.

BMI collects and analyses data on property occupancy costs from subscribers. These are published as individual data sheets, as well as forming the basis of special reports.
