The first update to The Housing Digest, the major reference work containing research and statistics on housing issues (e.g. private sector housing, the social rented sector, housing for special needs groups and homelessness) published electronically last summer by the then Department of the Environment, has just been made available.

Revised and updated, the Digest now contains many more hypertext links making it even easier for users to "surf" between entries.

In addition, because of the establishment of the new Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions, this latest issue of the Digest has been significantly redesigned to reflect the change in corporate identity.

Further improvements to the Digest also include the availability of a multi-user licence. This allows organisations to load the Digest onto their computer networks for use by a designated number of users.

Costs (exclusive of VAT) for the multi-user licence are, in the first year, £84.25 for one to four users, £67.40 for five to nine users, £50.55 for ten to 14 users and £33.70 for 15 or more users. In subsequent years, the costs are reduced to £51.06, £40.85, £30.64 and £20.42, respectively.

Organisations purchasing the Digest for multiple users will also require appropriate licences for Microsoft Internet Explorer. For this, subscribers may either choose multiple single user licences by installing the Internet Explorer supplied by the publishers of the Digest onto every PC requiring access; or purchase a multi-user licence direct from Microsoft.

The update to the Digest follows a survey carried out among existing subscribers. The results showed that 74 per cent of people using the Digest found it a useful reference tool with 42 per cent using it at least once a week, while 67 per cent thought it presented a comprehensive range of housing topics.

Responses to the survey were used to focus and prioritise the development of the latest update, with many user suggestions and comments implemented.
