Land Registry WAP application launched

Land Registry WAP application launched

The Land Registry launched the UK's first WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) application to be offered by a Government agency in October 2000.

The huge growth in mobile communications opens up numerous opportunities for accessing property related data wherever it is needed. Initially, the Land Registry WAP service enables anyone equipped with a WAP enabled mobile telephone or other suitable mobile device to: obtain residential property price data down to postcode sector level; obtain contact details for the regional offices; find out which regional office deals with property in a chosen area; and calculate land registry fees for most standard applications.

This service is available to members of the public as well as property professionals such as estate agents, surveyors and valuers who may wish to make on-the-spot enquiries about average property sales in the area they are currently located or need to contact their local land registry office.

The E-Envoy, Alex Allan, said:

The future both for the Internet and for government is in giving people the services they want when and where they want them. I am delighted to welcome the launch of the government's first WAP product – a significant step forward in delivering our online services in a variety of ways which are convenient for our customers.

WAP is an open global standard for communication between a mobile device such as a telephone and the Internet and/or other computer applications. WAP technology makes it possible to send and receive Internet-based information to mobile devices. i.e. mobile phones and Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs). Use of WAP will open significant possibilities for e-commerce, payment services, information services and entertainment.

The service is available for WAP enabled mobile telephones and other suitable mobile devices at http:www.landreg.gov.uk/wap/ or http://wappy.to/landregistry
