International Conference, 21-23 July 2003, Singapore

The 8th Asian Real Estate Society (AsRES) International Conference will be hosted by the National University of Singapore. The conference is co-sponsored by the American Real Estate and Urban Economics Association (AREUEA) and supported by the Real Estate Developers Association of Singapore (REDAS) and Singapore Institute of Surveyors and Valuers (SISV).

The conference will provide plenary sessions on key issues concerning real estate market development in Asia. In addition, the conference will have parallel paper-presentation and panel-discussion sessions on important topics of real estate and urban economics research as well as policy issues. Academics, practitioners and students in the areas of urban planning, urban economics, housing policy and real estate finance and investment are invited to participate in the conference by presenting a paper or attending the sessions. Professor Robert H. Edelstein (University of California at Berkeley) will be the keynote speaker for the conference.

The conference venue is the Pan Pacific Hotel, situated at the heart of Singapore's beautiful downtown waterfront development, adjacent to the recently opened Esplanade - - the Theatre on the Bay. Singapore offers visitors rich cultural experiences.

The conference provides two Best Paper Awards. Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Foundation will sponsor a £1,000 best paper award on "Property markets and sustainable development". American Real Estate Society (ARES) Foundation will sponsor a US$1,000 manuscript prize for the best paper presented at the AsRES conference. To be considered for the best paper awards, authors should submit complete and unpublished papers to FU Yuming by 15 June 2003.

Call for papers: special announcement

In recognition of the growing concerns for Asia housing issues, the conference organizes one special session on "Asian Housing Markets and Policies". This special session is to bring together scholars and policy makers specializing in housing policy, finance and practice of Asian countries to discuss important current issues and policy development. The special session calls for theoretical or empirical papers in areas including (but not limited to):

  • Housing development, construction, access/allocation and control.

  • Housing standards and costs.

  • Urban and/or rural housing markets.

  • Informal housing sectors.

  • Housing finance and practices.

  • Housing affordability, subsidies and social housing.

  • Housing reform, policy process and policy evaluation.

  • Housing and other social policies.

  • Cross-national housing and housing finance system comparisons.

Papers submitted to this special session will be considered for publication in a special issue of a major international refereed journal, subject to the normal reviewing process as well as the authors' consent. The special session is limited to ten papers. The papers that are submitted for the special session but cannot be accommodated will automatically be considered for presentation in regular AsRES sessions.
