Malvern Instruments has launched the MPT-1, a new multipurpose titrator for use with the company's Zetasizer systems (Plate 3).

The MPT-1 is intended for the automation of particle size, zeta potential and intensity measurements. Although it is said to be particularly useful where these parameters are measured as a function of pH, conductivity or additive concentration, the MPT-1 claims to have a truly universal application, being a sampler, dispenser and titrator all in one. It provides a straightforward sampling system that gives a controlled sampling environment and ensures consistent sample injection, whatever the application being performed on the Zetasizer.

The MPT-1 replaces current manual sampling techniques, which are inherently variable and operator dependent. With simple "Press and Go" operation the system is easy to use. Software control enables the user to develop their own Titrator Operating Procedures (TOPs), or to use those supplied with the system. Multiple method storage ensures that protocols are always available for future use.

The titrator features three separate titration dispensers, a fast-response pH electrode and patented syringe technology. Replaceable easy-to-change pump heads and rapidly interchangeable syringe units ensure that the system requires little attention.

For controlled sample handling, the pump speed and stir speeds are managed via the software. Volumes as low as 0.3µl can be programmed and the system can handle sample volumes from 30ml to 100ml.
