Manual sample dispersion unit for Mastersizer 2000

Keywords Dispersions, Malvern

Malvern Instruments has introduced a manual sample dispersion unit to extend the range of sample handling options available for the recently launched Mastersizer 2000 particle analyzer.

Two versions of the new unit are available, the Hydro MU (Plate 4) and the Hydro M, both of which are designed for manual preparation of wet samples. The higher specification Hydro 2000MU has a built in ultrasonic probe with variable output and timer to ensure uniformity of sample preparation. However, as not all materials require ultrasonication to achieve dispersion, the Hydro 2000M without ultrasonics provides a highly cost-effective alternative.

The Hydro 2000M and MU both use a 1000ml beaker as a sample tank. This is especially useful in areas without ready access to a water supply, and the relatively low cost of this standard laboratory item means that it can be easily replaced in the event of soiling or contamination.

Manual control is via an illuminated diaphragm touch panel designed for use under a wide variety of operating conditions. As part of the Mastersizer 2000 system, the Hydro 2000 units are provided with a flow cell cassette that is automatically recognised by the sizer software. This means that there is no need to pre-configure the software and the unit can be used with the SOP (standard operating procedure) utility. Although the SOP software does not control the pump speed, as it does in the system's automated sample dispersion units, it is possible to ensure that detailed operational instructions are displayed on the screen for users to follow.
