Rationalising on resins at Zeneca and DSM

Keywords: Zeneca, DSM, Resins

We have commented in recent issues on the growth of the multinationals, both as suppliers to and manufacturers of coatings, inks and adhesives, with more and more independents being taken over or merging. Running in conjunction with this trend - and mainly motivated by the same objective of becoming more competitive -- is the specialisation that is now taking place among leading material suppliers.

One of the latest examples is the agreement between the two leading Netherlands companies, Zeneca Resins and DSM Resins. whereby Zeneca has purchased DSM's industrial acrylic dispersions business.

Over the past several years the DSM Coating resins business has been concentrating on powder coating resins - for which it claims to be the global market leader, can and coil coating resins and automotive and decorative resins. In 1992 it sold its dispersions for non-industrial applications to Hoechst. It also hived off its printing ink and adhesives activities.

"The sale of the acrylic dispersions to Zeneca Resins is in line with the overall strategy of DSM to focus on its core business. It complements the sales of the vinylversetate and vinylacetate products to Indulor Chemie (Germany) earlier this month", says Herman Nanninga, marketing and sales director of the business unit Coating Resins of DSM.

"The specialised nature of Zeneca Resins will allow a better fit for DSM Resins' former industrial acrylic dispersion business. Zeneca Resins places priority on offering its customers superior products, technical service and quality deliveries", says Ad Ernst, business manager, coatings of Zeneca Resins. "This move will enable us to improve our position in both the clear and pigmented wood finishes markets, thereby offering our customers a broader range of industrial wood polymers."
