Two new inks from Du Pont

Du Pont Microcircuit Components and Materials (MCM) recently launched two new products. Expanding its offering of Luxprint ™ screen-printable inks, these two new products for the production of electroluminescent (EL) lamps and signs are believed to be ideal for applications where uniform lighting is required and space, cost efficiency and power are issues.

The new translucent conductor ink, can reportedly be screen-printed directly on to regular grades of Mylar® polyester film. This removes the need to use more expensive grades of ITO-sputtered film, for a less expensive and more efficient production process.

Also launched is a new white phosphor ink, which Du Pont informs us provides consistent colour ageing without toxic laser dyes, commonly found in other white phosphor inks.

With a long history of working in the automotive industry, supplying materials for microcircuit production, the Electronic Materials division of Du Pont has been at the forefront of recent developments in EL materials, working in close relationship with its customers.

Latest advances in EL lighting claims the following advantages and benefits:

  • Bright appealing colours.

  • No hot elements - very safe.

  • Cost-efficient - consume very little power.

  • Slim and flexible configuration.

  • Extended service lifetime.

  • Require very little wiring.

With all of the above benefits, the applications for EL lighting are huge. EL technology can basically be used in any situation where information visibility in darkness is important, and where there are constraints on the use of conventional lighting.

Current applications include backlighting for membrane touch switches, clocks, watches, LCDs, portable equipment, portable telephones and the illumination of automotive dashboards. They also have a slim and flexible configuration, with an extended service lifetime and require very little wiring.

EL lamps are also perfect for use in safety clothing, advertising and promotional signs. Their slim profile and on/off switching capability enable them to offer unique opportunities for attention-grabbing advertising billboards and professional attire.
