This new study from Information Research Ltd (IRL) reviews the market for paints in Western Europe. This detailed report updates the previous edition, published in 1998 by IRL's sister company IAL Consultants, and brings together the most up-to-date quantitative information available on the market for paints in Western Europe.

The report draws on IRL's extensive expertise developed during the course of more than 25 years of research into the European paints and coatings industry. This information was supplemented with a comprehensive programme of in-depth research.

The total West European market for paints in 1999 is estimated at 5,993 thousand tonnes, or 14,331 ECU million.

Water-based paints account for over 56 per cent of the total paint market in Western Europe, with solvent-based ones accounting for a further 39 per cent. Other paints account for just under 5 per cent of the total paint market in Western Europe (Table I).

The largest market for paints in Western Europe in 1999 was Germany, with a market size of 1,422 thousand tonnes or 3,327 ECU million (Table II).

Decorative paints account for around 50 per cent of the European paint market. A wide range of industrial and speciality applications accounts for the other 50 per cent (Table III).
