John A. Gordon Best Paper Award Competition

The John A. Gordon Best Paper Award will be presented for the best paper contributed to the Annual Meeting Technical Program. Members of the FSCT Annual Meeting Program Committee will consider all of the papers presented (excluding those submitted specifically for other Annual Meeting paper competitions) based on:

  1. 1.

technical merit, including objectivity and experimental design,

  2. 2.

relevance to coatings technology and its impact on the industry and

  3. 3.

presentation effectiveness, both in print and orally.

The author(s) of the John A. Gordon Best Paper Award will receive a total of $1,000 cash award and an inscribed certificate.

This award commemorates the many contributions made by the noted educator John A. Gordon to the coatings profession.

A.L. Hendry Awards Competition

Undergraduate student authors are encouraged to submit entries in the 2003 Alfred L. Hendry Award Competition, sponsored by the Southern Society for Coatings Technology.

This year’s award features cash prizes to both the student author (or authors) and the author’s sponsoring lab. The student receives a $1,000 cash award and expenses covering attendance at the FSCT Annual Meeting and International Coatings Expo in Philadelphia, PA, on 12-14 November, to receive the honor and a suitably inscribed certificate for the best paper submitted for the competition. In addition, the laboratory of the sponsoring school will receive a grant of $500.

The competition is administered by the FSCT Annual Meeting Program Committee and several committee members will judge the entries.

Submitted papers must describe the results of original research on a subject related to coatings technology, or present a significantly insightful, comprehensive review of a field of coatings technology. Work done on coatings related topics as part of an undergraduate research project or as a senior thesis is appropriate for submission.

Those wishing to enter the competition must send a letter of intent, along with the title of the proposed paper and a brief abstract, by 3 February 2003 to: Hendry Awards Committee, c/o FSCT, 492 Norristown Rd, Blue Bell, PA 19422-2350. The deadline for receipt of manuscripts is 19 May 2003.

The A.L. Hendry Award, sponsored by the Southern Society for Coatings Technology, commemorates the industry contributions of the late Alfred L. Hendry, President of A.L. Hendry Co. in Tampa, FL. He was a past-president of the Southern Society and an active participant in many of FSCT’s educational activities.

Poster sessions

Students are also encouraged to submit an entry into the Poster session. This competition is designed to provide a forum for individuals who are involved in coatings research by serving as a noncommercial arena for new ideas, new techniques, preliminary results, and/or work that is significant but not fully completed.

Each entry will be provided a display board to highlight his/her research project and will be required to staff the poster during scheduled times. The Poster session will be held in the exhibit hall and will be on display during exhibit hours. All displays will be judged on a scheduled basis during the times they are required to be staffed using the following criteria: originality/novelty, scientific content, and quality of display. Participation in the Poster session is at the discretion of the FSCT Annual Meeting Program Committee.

FSCT will offer awards for the best student poster displayed: First place – $500; Second place – $300; and Third place – $200.

The deadline for entry into the competition is 29 August 2003; however, if you would like to have your name, research project, and institution listed in the final ICE 2003 brochure, you must submit your entry by 16 June 2003.
