IMPRESSive courses in printing, packaging and graphics

IMPRESSive courses in printing, packaging and graphics

The IMPRESS programmes are run by the Colour Chemistry Department at the University of Leeds, in partnership with Leeds College of Technology. This is the only part time, guided distance learning course available for the printing and packaging industries.

Students can undertake a number of qualifications including an IMPRESS certificate, University Higher Education Certificate, Diploma or a University of Leeds BSc (Honours) degree over a 5 year period covering a broad syllabus, including printing, packaging, management, quality systems, design, materials, science and instrumental analysis. A bonus is that successful completion of the programme can lead to professional membership of the Institute of Printing.

Flexible entry requirements are offered, allowing entry on the basis of previous qualifications and/or industrial experience. All students are making excellent progress. Even at this early stage, several pieces of coursework have been submitted for publication in the literature.

Current IMPRESS students are employed in a wide range of roles, including printing, design, publishing, raw material manufacturing, supply, and technical services. Gary Davies, Operations Manager, aged 33 says “I can apply scientific principles and an understanding to a traditionally craft-based business. The course has given me the confidence to use in my workplace what we have been taught by the country's leading academics in printing science.”

The IMPRESS programme is continually reviewed and developed to reflect student and tutor comments, and to address the changing needs of the printing industries. Industry observers have commented on the need for the provision of training. This novel programme was designed to minimise workplace disruption by the use of part-time, guided distance learning. Upon completion of the programme, our aim is to supply employers with the knowledgeable, multiskilled employees that the industry is so keen to recruit and retain.
