Studying adhesion effects at a molecular level
Professor Jeanne E. Pemberton at the University of Arizona in Tuscon has been awarded the American Chemical Society's 2004 Award in Analytical Chemistry, for developing a method to study the adhesion of liquids on solid surfaces on a molecular level, e.g. the effects of electrical charge on the adhesion of ink on paper. Among others, Pemberton's findings may have an impact on the further development on erasable electronic paper, or on corrosion control. Pemberton's group analyses the liquid/solid interface using a unique emersion “technique that applies a drop of liquid onto the end of a rotating cylinder, which then spreads into a thin film only a few molecules thick”. Vibrational spectroscopy is then employed to study the structure of the molecular layer in the boundary.
