Nanophase Technologies Corp. Romeoville, IL, announces a global partnership with Altana Chemie AG to produce certain nanomaterials for use in paint, coatings and plastics
Nanophase, a developer of nanomaterials and nanoengineered products, said the companies will collaborate in developing materials for specialty market areas such as general industrial coatings, architectural coatings, coil coatings, automotive OEM and refinish coatings, printing ink, and plastics. Nanophase said that the companies plan to start product co-development immediately and expect initial market-product introductions by late 2004. Nanophase also said Altana has acquired more than 1.2 million shares of Nanophase common stock for $10 million in cash. Dan Bilicki, Nanophase Vice-President of Sales and Marketing, said the company views the partnership as offering “immediate and long-term market opportunities”. Joseph Cross, the company's President and CEO, said market studies suggest that demand for nanocomposites in coatings is expected to grow significantly. Nanophase is a manufacturer of nanoparticles, coated nanoparticles and nanoparticle dispersions supplied in a variety of media. ALTANA Chemie, based in Wesel, Germany, is a producer of specialty chemicals used in coatings, additives, sealants, plastics, and other products.
