The Chinese printing inks market is growing
The Chinese printing inks market is growing
The Chinese market for printing inks is estimated at almost 285,000 tonnes in 2004 and with average growth of 5.9 percent p.a. could reach a total of 379,000 tonnes by 2009. The market is dominated by vast volumes of offset inks and solvent-based inks. The Chinese printing ink industry is highly fragmented and has about 400 ink makers, although only 30 are of any appreciable size. The majority of ink production in China originates from the facility investments made by multinationals or through their wholly- owned operations and subsidiaries in China, such as Toyo, T&K Toka and DIC. Among the leading indigenous producers are Shanghai Peony Printing Ink Co. Ltd and Zhaoqing Tianlong Ink Chemical Co. Ltd. There is huge potential for development in the Chinese printing ink market, arising from a combination of relentless urbanisation and strong consumerism. Packaging is an enormous end-market, while publishing is making gains through the increased freedom enjoyed in contemporary Chinese culture, creating a boom for publication inks. Advertising is also a key sector, with China laying claim to the world's largest outdoor sign industry.
