Colorful Europe: Ceresana analyzes the paint and varnish market

Paints and varnishes are not only pretty – they also protect houses, vehicles, and other precious objects against corrosion and decay. Even their mere material value is considerable: “Revenues in Europe will increase to €27.7 billion by 2018,” says Oliver Kutsch, CEO of Ceresana Research. The market research institute is currently publishing a new study on the European paint and varnish market.

On the road

The transport industry is of special significance: although this sector accounts for less than 8 percent of the entire paint and varnish market, its share in terms of value totals almost 15 percent. Car series paints, refinish coatings, and ship paints enjoy above-average growth. Demand for industrial varnishes, the second-largest field of application behind the construction industry, is especially increasing in Russia, Poland, and Turkey. But also some West European countries, like The Netherlands, record above European average growth, which amounts to 1.6 percent per year. Powder coatings, acryl varnishes, and epoxy-based products are also gaining importance.

Build-up in Eastern Europe

The construction industry’s influence on the paint and varnish market continues to decline. While the construction industry accounted for approximately 59 percent of European demand in 2002, its share is anticipated to drop to 56 percent by 2018. However, this trend is weakened by rising sales of dispersion paints in Eastern Europe.

Organic and nano coatings are gaining popularity

Many manufacturers develop solvent-free and environmentally friendly paints and varnishes that are, for example, suitable for steel containers or internal coatings. This allows reducing environmental pollution by VOC emissions. A great number of companies are working on product solutions, which offer special properties: apart from heat insulation, especially nanotechnology is a topic of the future, e.g. when it comes to self-cleaning of antibacterial coatings.

Practice-oriented study

The market report of Ceresana Research provides a concise overview of the different coating products. The paint and varnish market in 30 European countries is analyzed in detail, i.e. demand and production as well as import, export, and revenue. Each important field of application is examined individually: construction industry, wood processing, transport industry, but also coatings for plastics, corrosion protection varnishes, and ceramics and glass coatings. A useful list of producers in Vol. II offers comprehensive profiles of the 138 largest manufacturers of paints and varnishes. The report, available in English or German, forecasts market opportunities and risks until 2018 (www.ceresana.com/en/market-studies/industry/paints-and-varnishes/).

Flexible and elastic: Ceresana analyzes the market for plasticizers

Plastics, paints and varnishes, rubber, and adhesives are often mixed with colorless liquids to make them soft, flexible, and usable. “Plasticizers are among the best-selling chemicals,” explains Oliver Kutsch, CEO of Ceresana Research. “Worldwide demand for plasticizers will jump to more than 7.6 million tonnes per year until 2018.” The market research institute is currently publishing a new market study on these indispensable additives.

Growth in emerging countries

While Ceresana expects that demand for plasticizers in North America and Western Europe will only see below-average growth in future, demand in countries such as India, Russia, or Brazil will increase by more than 4 percent per year. The Asia-Pacific region is already the largest market for plasticizers, with China holding the top position with a share of about two-thirds.

PVC does not have to be brittle

The most important application areas of plasticizers include floorings, profiles, cables, and films made of plastics. They account for more than half of all demand because some PVC grades contain up to 40 percent of plasticizers. However, demand in the adhesive, paint, and rubber industries is increasing even faster than in the plastics sector.

Environmentally friendly alternatives

In 2010, the market was still dominated by phthalate plasticizers. With a roughly 54 percent share, di-(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) was the most important plasticizer. However, DEHP will be increasingly replaced by other plasticizers over the next years. Owing to legal provisions and growing environmental awareness, producers are increasingly forced to use non-phthalate plasticizers, e.g. based on vegetable oils. In North America, for example, alternative plasticizers had a 30 percent share as soon as in 2010.

Extensive market analysis

The practice-oriented study of Ceresana Research gives a concise overview of the different types of plasticizers. The plasticizer market is analyzed in detail: demand divided into types of plasticizers, revenues, and prices. This study focuses on the 18 countries with the largest demand. In addition, the most important application areas are analyzed one by one. The useful list of producers in Vol. II offers 213 profiles of the most important plasticizer manufacturers worldwide. The study, available in English or German, forecasts market opportunities and risks up to 2018 (www.ceresana.com/en/market-studies/additives/plasticizers-new/).

Innovative colors – special effects: Ceresana analyzes the pigment market

Pigments are needed in large quantities: printing inks, paints and varnishes, plastics, and the coloring of construction materials are important growth markets. Other segments, such as cosmetics, paper, textiles, ceramics, and glass, use pigments to provide more gloss to their products. More and more manufacturers improve their packaging and promotional items by using modern colors and visual effects. Ceresana’s first in-depth study on the global pigment market was soon out of stock – the new, updated study on pigments is now available.

Growth in emerging countries

Ceresana Research expects that pigment revenues will increase to more than US$45 billion by 2018. In 2010, the Asia-Pacific region was responsible for 45 percent of the global demand for pigments. The second-largest market was North America, followed by Western Europe. Ceresana anticipates that the Asia-Pacific will continue to significantly influence market dynamics in future. The rapidly developing emerging markets have the greatest growth potential, above all China and India. Moreover, South America and the Middle East register above-average growth rates of 3.6-4.4 percent.

Diverse preferences

The demand for different types of pigments in individual regions shows different developments. Iron oxides and organic pigments record the highest growth rates in North America and Western Europe. In emerging markets, especially the demand for carbon black pigments is increasing. Carbon black is used in many plastics and rubbers. Ceresana expects that the white pigment titanium dioxide will have a share of somewhat more than 60 percent of the global pigment market in 2018. Iron oxides, currently mainly used for paints and varnishes, are also gaining importance for other products, e.g. in the food and cosmetics industry.

Much more than just colorants

Pigments have always been used primarily as colorants. However, secondary properties are gaining importance, for example protection from UV rays or corrosion prevention. Product innovations primarily aim at organic, effect, and special pigments. The focus is on higher color intensity, color variety, and additional properties, such as self-cleaning and antibacterial characteristics, insulating properties, or the reflection of infrared light. Organic pigments do only have a small market share in volume, but they benefit from above-average growth in the demand from producers of printing inks, plastics, and textiles.

Practice-oriented market report

The new study by Ceresana Research contains more than 1,000 pages, providing comprehensive analyses of the global pigment market. Especially the 18 most important countries are analyzed in detail, including relevant market data on the individual fields of application. A useful introductory chapter summarizes the most important information on the different types of pigments, their classification, properties, raw materials, production, application areas, and legal situation. Vol. II is a useful list of producers that includes 303 profiles of the largest pigment manufacturers. The study, available in English and German, forecasts turnover and sales volumes up to 2018: besides, the study offers a closer look at market opportunities and risks, influencing factors, product innovations, and trends (www.ceresana.com/en/market-studies/additives/pigments-new/).
