NanoKTN event helps UK company secure £50,000 of sales following presentation at Nanotechnology and the Coatings Industry event

Article Type: Industry news From: Pigment & Resin Technology, Volume 42, Issue 2

The Nanotechnology Knowledge Transfer Network (NanoKTN – www.nanoKTN.com), one of the UK’s primary knowledge-based networks for micro and nanotechnologies, is pleased to announce that one of its members, Datum developments, has secured over £50,000 of sales from attending one of its events. Datum developments attended the joint NanoKTN, British Coatings Federation (BCF) and the Paint Research Association (PRA) event in November last year, using its speaking slot as a promotional platform for PolcoatTM, its unique polyimide coating process.

The “Nanotechnology and the Coatings Industry” conference, an annual conference organised by the NanoKTN in partnership with BCF and PRA, provided Datum developments with a platform to promote its unique coating process to key target audiences, as well as providing the company with the opportunity to create new collaborations with potential partners.

CEO Peter Jefferies believe that the contacts made at the event, which have since led to sales estimated at over £50,000, would not have been secured without the opportunities provided by this conference.

“This event has provided us with a means of demonstrating our technology to a relevant and receptive audience. We presented at the Nanotechnology and the Coatings Industry event and by doing so, made a number of valuable contacts in our target markets of aerospace, automotive, natural resources, communications and medical. There’s no doubt that without attending this event, these contacts which have turned into sales leads, would not have been made,” explains Peter Jefferies. “Working with the NanoKTN has been fantastic and I would recommend that other companies and start-ups register for free membership and get involved. These events have given us excellent visibility within the market, helping us to meet potential partners and customers to grow our business.”

The NanoKTN’s coatings focus group brings people together to support a competitive nano-coatings industry in the UK. The coatings focus group works with BCF and PRA to discuss the benefits, opportunities and challenges provided to the coatings industry by nanotechnologies. The group’s annual conference demonstrates the benefits and potential use of nanomaterials in raw materials, inks and many coatings applications.

“We’re delighted to see one of our members doing so well, using our events as promotional platforms for their solutions and meeting partners to help further commercialise their products to an international audience. We look forward to hearing more about Datum development as its PolcoatTM technology adds to the growing portfolio of successful UK pioneering technologies and innovations,” adds Dr Barry Park, Theme Manager at the NanoKTN.

PolcoatTM is a new coating process for the deposition of fine polyimide films directly on to any conductive surface. The resulting film has similar properties to other high performance polyimide products such as Kapton® P84® and Norton TH® but without the process limitations associated with conventional film or liquid coatings.

PolcoatTM has two primary advantages over existing products, the ability to coat complex geometries and variable topographies and the capability to coat variable thicknesses from under 1-50 μm with the same product and process set up. These features are enabling new designs to be realised and significant cost saving to be achieved in existing products. Early stage clients in a broad range of industries from electronics to aerospace and medical devices have validated the benefits of PolcoatTM. The majority of applications benefit from a fine coating in the commercial target range between 1 and 20 μm, where adhesive and sheet films will not deliver and CVD is not economically scalable. Visual display clients have seen significant benefit from the excellent conformal coating uniformity.
