Editorial

Article Type: Editorial From: Quality Assurance in Education, Volume 16, Issue 2.

The genesis of this special issue was during the visit of the editor John Dalrymple to Pakistan during the First International Conference on Higher Education Quality held at the the University of Punjab, Lahore, in December 2006, to deliver a keynote address on “Quality in contemporary higher education”. He became familiar with the work in Pakistan of introduction of regulation for greater alignment with the international standards to enable Pakistan’s excellent institutions and their graduates to compete in international markets, whilst also raising the standards throughout the higher education system within Pakistan through the development of the Higher Education Commission.

This got us thinking about devoting a special issue to focus on the efforts in developing countries to improve quality in education. We are very grateful to Professor Niaz Ahmed who has done a great job as the Guest Editor and also to the various contributors who have provided an extensive picture of various facets of quality systems in various countries across the continents.
