Notes on key reviews in this issue

Article Type: Editorial notes and queries From: Reference Reviews, Volume 27, Issue 4

  • Brill’s Encyclopedia of Hinduism. Vol. IV (RR 2013/128). The penultimate volume of what will be, on completion, the standard modern encyclopedia on Hinduism. This review follows our extensive coverage of the preceding volumes (RR 2010/201, RR 2011/150 and RR 2012/153).

  • Country Reports (RR 2013/161). One of a number of “factbook” type online products, this US orientated resource is aimed at school libraries and contains over 35,000 pages of statistical and other information on the countries of the world.

  • Directory of Open Access Journals (RR 2013/126). Now listing almost 8,500 freely available peer reviewed journals this is one of the longest established and best known sources for information on non-subscription electronic journals.

  • Encyclopedia of Christian Civilization (RR 2013/131). A major publication from Wiley-Blackwell, this four volumes set (also available as part of the Wiley Online Library) provides over 1,400 articles focusing on the Christian impact on philosophy, history, literature, law, art, science, etc. as well as biographical entries and articles on Christian theology.

  • Encyclopedia of Nanotechnology (RR 2013/146). Another major Springer science and technology encyclopedia reviewed here in its electronic version but also available as a four volume set. Although nanotechnology is a fast moving field, this is likely to be a significant source of reference information for some time to come.

  • Encyclopedia of the War of 1812 (RR 2013/162). Published to coincide with the two-hundredth anniversary of a sometimes forgotten clash between the United States and Great Britain, this three volume set is a further contribution to ABC-Clio’s encyclopedias on world conflicts edited by Spencer Tucker, the last of which we covered in these columns was Encyclopedia of the Spanish-American and Philippine-American Wars (RR 2010/141).

  • Workhouse Encyclopedia (RR 2013/138). The first significant encyclopedic reference work devoted to the British workhouse (a nineteenth and early twentieth century British institution established to provide “relief” for the impoverished).

  • World Digital Library (RR 2013/164). Our second look (RR 2010/251 for previous review) at this potentially major free source of “significant primary materials from countries and cultures around the world” which, as of January 2013, provided access to 6,627 items.

Update

In issue 26(7) we published a review of The Romantic Era Redefined (RR 2012/309) from Alexander Street Press. This product is no longer available, but Alexander Street Press is now offering the very similar Romanticism Redefined: Pickering & Chatto and The Wordsworth Circle. Further information is available at: http://alexanderstreet.com/products/romanticism-redefined-pickering-chatto-and-wordsworth-circle

Correction

In our review of Archive of the Now in Vol. 27 No. 2 (RR 2013/052) we incorrectly gave the name of the product director as “Andrew Brady”. This should have read Andrea Brady.
