What's on the web

Good ideawww.onlybusinessadvice.com

The layout of this site is incredibly simple. It merely consists of various links to other web sites. As a tool for running searches it could prove to be quite a handy discovery, as long as one is not expecting any information or advice from the site itself. Some of the links it lists contain some fairly good information; others are not quite as useful. The advantage of this site over some of the larger search engines is that the focus is entirely on business related practices. These include sites offering advice on business start up through to companies offering investment solutions. Take a look at this site when searching for information; it could save some time.

And another onewww.yourbusinesschannel.com

A colourful, vibrant site containing listings of various shows related to different aspects of business practice. The layout is particularly good, simple to use but with enough detail, picture and graphic use to pique ones interest. Although it contains some written information, the main focus is on other forms of media, especially on visual effects and programmes. There is the option to watch the various shows that are currently being run on the site, along with listings of new programmes and interviews that will be shown soon. One is required to register online in order to view these programmes; however registration is quick, easy, and free. This site is certainly worth looking at, especially if you need a break from reading.

A good startwww.startups.co.uk

Offering information, advice, and topical articles, this site could prove to be really quite useful. Although not the most user-friendly of web sites, the content makes up for this to a large extent. The pop-up advertisements can get particularly irritating, but at least once they are closed they stay closed. Advice on starting various different types of business is provided, in addition to information for established entrepreneurs. Plenty of news issues are reported on the site, along with success stories and ‘how they did it’ reports from other business people. There is a good forum on the site, where one can discuss business issues, ask questions, and generally network (you are required to register to use this service). Overall, the information provided on this site certainly makes it worth spending a little time on.

Reduce your footprint herewww.envirowise.gov.uk

‘Envirowise offers UK businesses free, independent, confidential advice and support on practical ways to increase profits, minimise waste and reduce environmental impact’. This site basically provides advice and information for businesses regarding ways in which they can be more environmentally friendly, whilst still benefiting themselves. Advice on legal issues concerning environmental impact of businesses, along with case studies and best practice guides are provided on the web site. The site itself is quite minimalist in appearance, and although does not look overly appealing actually contains some worthwhile nuggets of information. Envirowise is a government funded initiative, and as such is an up-to-date resource concerning environmental issues. For anyone concerned about the impact their business has on the environment this site is definitely worth earmarking.

Free advicewww.middletonpartners.co.uk

Middleton Partners are a business focusing on insolvency issues. The site is well presented and easy to use. Although the emphasis of the site is on providing information about what the company does rather than providing generic business advice, it is probably worth taking a look at (this is especially true if one’s business is going through any sort of financial difficulties). The general presentation and layout inspires confidence, and the company certainly appears to know what they are doing. Part of the company’s focus is on providing free advice to businesses with problems, and a proportion of their profits go towards funding a free business help line. The company has practitioners working in seven locations across the UK, although advice can also be provided over the phone. For any matters regarding insolvency this site seems like a good place to start searching for advice.

And finallyThis has been around a while but is well worth repeating:

One evening an old Cherokee Indian told his grandson about a “battle” that goes on inside people.

He said, “My boy, the battle is between two ‘wolves’ inside us all.”

“One is evil. It is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, anger, false pride and ego.”

“The other is good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather:

“Which wolf wins?” The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”
