Qualitative research in finance

Edited by: Dr Bruce Burton, University of Dundee

Studies in economics and finance, now a member of the Emerald stable of leading academic journals, requests submissions for a special issue devoted to the use of qualitative research methods in finance. Empirical studies making use of interview, case study and survey methods to investigate the following (non-exhaustive) list of topics are welcomed:

  • inconsistency in managerial and investor perceptions of market pricing mechanisms;

  • evidence and opinions on bubbles, herding and speculative behaviour;

  • managerial and investor views regarding stock market overreaction;

  • investors' portfolio choices, including the incorporation of risk;

  • managerial decision-making frameworks, including the incorporation of risk;

  • the role of market timing in relation to major corporate news releases;

  • principal-agent relationships in the modern global financial environment;

  • responses to changes in corporate governance regulations and structures;

  • over-commitment to real and financial investments;

  • practitioner perspectives on external financing decisions;

  • corporate communication and the transmission of price- sensitive information; and

  • divergence between theory and practice in the use of derivatives.

The submission of papers investigating methodological issues around the use of qualitative techniques in finance research is also encouraged.

Articles of 4,000-5,000 words for consideration for publication should be submitted (electronically via e-mail in Word format) by 30 September 2006 to: Dr Bruce Burton, Department of Accountancy and Business Finance, University of Dundee, Dundee, DD1 4HN. UK, e-mail: b.m.burton@dundee.ac.uk
