ABB strengthens its automation business in the UK

International engineering and technology group, ABB, has appointed Mike Mason as managing director of its expanded instrumentation business in the UK, following the successful merger with Elsag Bailey.

Mike Mason was previously UK managing director of Eisag Bailey and takes responsibility for all ABB's instrumentation activities throughout the UK.

These include the Control Valve division (formerly ABB Kent Introl), a world leader in control and choke valves based at Brighouse, West Yorkshire; the Process Instrumentation division (formerly ABB Kent-Taylor) which manufactures controllers and recorders, transmitters, flow meters and water analysers with principal locations at St Neots, Cambridgeshire, and Stonehouse, Gloucestershire; and Elsag Bailey Instrumentation which includes the Fischer and Porter and Bush Beach engineering facilities in Workington, Cheadle and Telford. Mike Mason will also have responsibility for the Process Analytics division in Telford, St Neots and Chester.

Commenting on his appointment, Mike Mason said, "With the successful merger of ABB and Elsag Bailey we have formed an automation company of truly impressive proportions. As part of that team, ABB Instrumentation Ltd is the leading supplier in the field and our challenge is to continue working together with our customers to ensure a measurable return on their investment and together extend the boundaries of control and instrumentation."

The automation systems activities of Elsag Bailey UK will become part of Stevenage-based ABB Industrial Systems Ltd Sales, project implementation and support of the Symphony and Freelance range of process control systems and after sales support of the Bailey Controls, Fischer and Porter, and Hartmann and Braun installed base of systems, will be incorporated into the Projects and Automation Division under the leadership of Steve Brown, director and general manager, reporting to managing director David Denton.

Steve Brown commented, "The process of integrating our activities to support the automation marketplace is well underway. We will continue to operate the Telford base for automation systems as a sales, operations and staging facility for the division in close cooperation with Stevenage headquarters."
