The introduction of the Themalert GP series by Raytek Corporation now enables infrared temperature measurement to compete with thermocouples and other probe devices (see Plate 3). The cost factor is especially significant in a wide range of multiple-sensor web applications. Examples are paper, textile and plastic production, where noncontact methods allow measurement of the actual process material rather than the heating medium.

The series features an -18 to 538 degree Celsius temperature range, compact or miniature sensing head, and a one eighth, (1/8) DIN digital monitor with comprehensive signal conditioning. The specification equips the Thermalert GP for a variety of applications. These include continuous ovens and web processes in the food, paper, textiles and plastics industries, where monitoring or controlling temperature profiles across a surface is vital, and direct contact sensing is impractical. Measurements in printing, packaging material manufacture, pharmaceuticals, automotive paint drying and predictive machinery maintenance can also benefit from this approach.

Application flexibility is accomplished through a selection of sensor optics, sizes, and accessories. Integral signal conditioning provides peak/valley hold, averaging, and fixed background ambient temperature compensation, along with an adjustment to correct for different target material characteristics.

The instrument has a user configured, 4-20mA signal output, and dual set-point alarm or control contacts. It is powered from 110/220 VAC, 50-60Hz line voltage, eliminating special power supplies. Accessories include cooling and purging attachments for extreme environments, and a right angle mirror for applications where direct line-of-sight is not possible.

Raytek Corporation is a world leader in the design, manufacturing and marketing of noncontact, portable and fixed system infrared temperature measurement instruments.
