New Leuze Mayser sensor gives warning of congestion on bottling and canning lines

The latest addition to Leuze Mayser's expanding range of photoelectric sensors is designed specifically to monitor for congestion on production and packaging lines in the food, drinks and pharmaceutical industries (see Plate 14). A feature of the new RK diffuse reflection scanner is that it provides a non-contact method of detecting flow congestion, making it equally at home in monitoring aluminium cans as well as lightweight PET bottles.

To ensure prompt detection and prevention of congestion in bottle conveying lines, mechanical/optical or mechanical/inductive solutions are mounted at the conveyor belt. However, this can cause something of a problem when working with lightweight PET bottles. A purely optical-based new congestion switch, the RK scanner, which does not come into mechanical contact with the bottles, provides manufacturing industries with superior monitoring accuracy, thus optimising flow-control. In the case of PET bottles one of the key advantages is that it helps eliminate line pressure

The new RK scanner operates at a scanning range between 10 and 60 mm and is able to detect objects over its entire unit width of 170 mm without blind spots. If the sensor detects no gaps between the passing bottles, a congestion warning is relayed to the higher-level control system. The system is able to compensate for wobbling movements or large gaps between bottles.

The new RK scanner complements Leuze Mayser's comprehensive portfolio of optical sensors including models designed specifically to cope with the inherent problems of monitoring clear objects such as glass and PET bottles.
