Applicant: Claud S. Gordon CompanyPatent number: US5857777Publication date: 12 January 1999Title: Smart temperature sensing device

This invention generally relates to a temperature sensing device. More particularly, the invention relates to a pre-programmed smart temperature sensor having custom calibration coefficients uniquely characterising the sensor stored in a memory local to the sensor. A smart temperature sensing device includes a sensor and a memory on a sensor unit. The memory contains a plurality of custom non-linear calibration coefficients which uniquely characterise the sensor. A temperature system includes the smart temperature sensing device and a FSAU having a processor which downloads the calibration coefficients and utilises them in converting electrical signals from the sensor into temperature values that represent the temperature at the sensor. A method of calibrating a sensor includes measuring an output signal of the sensor over a temperature range, thereby obtaining a plurality of paired data points. The paired data points are used in a curve-fitting algorithm to obtain coefficients to a polynomial that characterises the non-linear temperature-voltage relationship of the sensor. The coefficients are stored within the memory until downloaded by the processor for use in signal conversion.
