The development of advanced chemical sensors and bio-sensors thus requires integration of a chemical or biological recognition layer and a physical transducer (e.g. electrode, fibre optic). The goal is to convert the selective chemical or biological recognition event into a useful electrical signal. The research group at New Mexico State University is currently exploring the fundamental aspects of the recognition and transduction events in sensors. Current research projects include the development of sequence-specific hybridisation DNA bio-sensors (gene-chips), electrochemistry of nucleic acids, miniaturised (micro-machined) analytical systems and micro-separation (CZE) chips, new sol-gel derived electrochemical sensors, micro-fabricated enzyme electrodes, remote sensors for environmental monitoring, advanced chemical and biological recognition schemes, tailored (catalytic and preconcentrating) surfaces, hand-held micro-analysers, and automated flow systems.

The laboratory makes intensive use of the opportunities offered by AFM, STM and electron beam lithography. Current research projects include nano-tubes, magnetic quantum computing, nano-wires project, nano-magnets project, nano- tribology, sensors, scanning probe microscopy and electron beam lithography.

The Nanoscale Science Laboratory website is a well presented and innovative site which contains a huge amount of news and pictures about nano-technology.

This is a huge and informative site and is well worth visiting even though some links to sections about nanotechnology are still under development.
