IPC releases Spanish version of IPC-A-610B

Keywords Electronic assembly, IPC, Spain

A Spanish version of IPC's most popular document, the IPC-A-610B, Acceptability of Electronic Assemblies, is now available.

"I hope this helps extend the global impact of the IPC-A-610", says IPC vice president of technical programs David Bergman. "It is difficult for companies to implement the IPC-A-610 standard when they have a non English-speaking workforce. Now it is easier for companies to train their Spanish-speaking workforce according to the IPC-A-610 standard".

Constantino Gonzalez, president of Assembly Contract Manufacturing Engineering and Cindy Gomez, Gomez Technology Services, translated the document into Spanish. IPC then had a group of six to ten Spanish speaking individuals check the translation for accuracy.

Gonzalez says it was important for IPC to translate this document into Spanish for two reasons: most of the labor force in Latin America don't speak English that well, some not at all; and the document is widely accepted in Latin America and Spanish speaking countries. "In my courses, I always have problems because I teach the A-610 in Spanish, and the documentation is in English. That's one of the reasons why I wanted to be involved with this project".

The Spanish translation of the IPC-A-610 may be a sign of more things to come from the IPC. Bergman says IPC is considering translating the J-STD-001 and the J-STD-001 Handbook into Spanish. He indicates that IPC member requests have also led IPC to consider translating the next update of the IPC-A-610 into a number of different languages, including French, German, Italian, Arabic and Hebrew.
